Triage Project for Palliative Care Priorities

How should we decide which patient’s needs are the most urgent when there is only one more bed available in the hospice, or there is only time for one more home-visit today?

Researchers at the VCCC Palliative Medicine Research Group and the Centre for Palliative Care are developing a much-needed system for palliative care triage and are pleased to share that this body of research is nearing completion.

The Responding to Urgency of Need in Palliative Care (RUN-PC) Triage Tool is informed by a qualitative study1,2 and a large world-first online international experiment.3 The final tool is under consideration for publication and analysis of the validation study is currently being finalised. Thank you to all who have contributed their clinical wisdom to the various stages so far!

Working together with the Department of Health and Safer Care Victoria, an implementation pilot of the RUN-PC Triage Tool is soon to commence in a series of Victorian palliative care services so please stay tuned. The outcomes of this important project will facilitate more equitable, efficient and transparent allocation of palliative care resources for all.

Thanks for your ongoing support and interest.
