Responding to urgency of need in palliative care

Responding to urgency of need in palliative care: The development and evaluation of a decision aid for palliative care triage

Aim

This multi-stage study aims to develop a decision aid for the efficient, transparent and equitable allocation of inpatient and community-based palliative care services.

Research Overview

Beginning with a qualitative re-exploration of clinical characteristics that indicate urgency, the first stage of the study will consist of focus groups with health professionals, carers and consumer representatives. Subsequent stages will include an online discrete choice experiment to determine how various factors should be weighted comparatively, a validity study of the decision aid developed to establish inter-rater reliability and face validity, and finally a post-implementation evaluation of the performance of the decision aid in everyday practice.
