STEP Study

Synopsis

A Randomised Phase II Trial to Examine Feasibility of Standardised, Early Palliative (STEP) Care for Patients with Advanced Cancer and their Carers

Research Overview

Palliative care has demonstrated benefits for improving the quality of life of advanced cancer patients and family caregivers; however the service is not always accessed. Referrals to palliative care are often delayed owing to an inability to pick “the right time”. This trial is testing the feasibility of a novel model of palliative care for advanced breast cancer, prostate and brain cancer patients and their carers at specific “transition points”.  Patients identified as reaching these transition points will be randomised to receive usual care or usual care plus STEP care. STEP care is the addition of standardised outpatient palliative care.
