Aim
In 2012, the Renal Health Clinical Network (RHCN) Leadership Group established a Renal Supportive Care (RSC) working group, comprising of members from a broad range of health services and professions, to provide advice, direction and guidance to the Department of Health (DoH) on the issues related to renal supportive care.
The RSC working group aimed to help guide and support the state wide approach to renal supportive care by developing a RSC pathway/model of care for Victoria to assist people with end stage kidney disease (ESKD) to access appropriate supportive care education and services in a timely and equitable way.
Outcomes
The Victorian Department of Health and Human Services (through the Renal Clinical Network), the Centre for Palliative Care (CPC) and the Renal Society of Australasia (RSA) developed and delivered a one-day workshop to each of the 10 renal hubs throughout Victoria. The workshops were very popular, with capacity registrations received for each of the workshops.
An important aspect of the workshops was the use of a collaborative teaching model, which successfully engaged the participating renal and palliative care physicians.
The participants completed evaluations and the results overwhelmingly suggested the content was relevant to practice and had improved the participants’ knowledge and confidence to respond to assessing and managing symptoms for patients with chronic kidney disease.
